HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall rallied from a 12-point deficit late, but James Madison held off the Thundering Herd in a 74-67 win on Thursday night in a battle of the Sun Belt's undefeated women's basketball teams at Cam Henderson Center.
Head Coach Tony Kemper's side will look to regroup quickly before facing Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Kids 12 and under will receive free admission for that game. The first 500 kids ages 12 and under will also receive a free book, courtesy of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
"We obviously, I think, could've played better," Coach Kemper said. "We were 24 of 70 and I've really been on them lately about being better when we're out here working on game-speed shots and their process and focus when we are doing that. I think our offense was out of sorts all night."
The size of James Madison gave Marshall fits with the Dukes scoring 40 points in the paint. The league's top rebounding team grabbed six more boards than MU and the 74 points were the most the Herd have allowed this year.
Marshall (9-5, 2-1 SBC) did manage to frustrate the conference's top NET ranked team early, forcing five JMU turnovers in the first quarter. Sophomore Aarionna Redman's steal and layup gave Marshall the 17-13 lead after one quarter. Redman, who finished with a career-high 13 points, also hit some big baskets in the second half as Marshall rallied.
"It's not the outcome that we wanted, but we're going to compete to the last buzzer every time," Redman said. "It's on to the next. We're going to watch film and try to correct things we did mess up, but it's on to the next. They're a really good team."
The second and third quarters proved costly for the Herd, with James Madison (13-2, 3-0 SBC) outscoring the hosts 43-27 in those frames to earn their 10th straight win.
The Herd entered the fourth down 12 before Roshala Scott converted a three-point play to start the period. Roshala led the team with 19 points, leading the team in scoring for the 10th time this season. A triple from Sydni Scott and consecutive layups from Abby Beeman trimmed the deficit to six. Beeman also finished in double figures for the seventh time this year with 16 points.
Redman's 3-pointer from the corner brought the Herd to within three with just over four minutes remaining. Shanniah Wright would later convert a three-point play to get the Herd within 64-62, but Marshall was unable to get over the hump.
