HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's women's basketball team scored 30 points in the fourth quarter, including a lengthy run to take a brief lead, but Georgia Southern left Cam Henderson Center with an 83-80 win in an exciting opener to a Saturday doubleheader.
Marshall (9-6, 2-2 SBC) took an 80-79 lead with 52 seconds left in the game after Roshala Scott hit a driving layup in traffic to produce the Herd's first lead of the contest. However, Georgia Southern (11-2, 3-1 SBC) knocked down four free throws following that basket to get out of Huntington with the win.
"There's no moral victories," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "That doesn't work. We've moved this (program) in a fashion that we have to take care of home court."
Scott finished with 24 points in a balanced effort for the Thundering Herd, who trailed by 21 points with 5:43 left before scoring the game's next 22 points to turn the game around.
Scott scored nine of her 24 points during the run and Abby Beeman added seven of her 12 points in the five-minute stretch to fuel the rally. Aarionna Redman and Meredith Maier each added 3-pointers during the run also.
For the second straight game, Redman found her rhythm from the floor to help Marshall get into offensive flow.
Marshall trailed by as many as 23 early in the third quarter when Kemper inserted a new lineup in search of a spark. Redman responded, scoring 11 of her career-high 18 points in the third quarter to right the ship for the Thundering Herd.
"I thought that when I subbed five-in and five-out, the group that came in leveled our effort," Kemper said. "I thought that was important.
Redman's career-high 18 points came on 7 of 10 shooting and led a Marshall bench effort that produced 31 points in the contest.
Despite being out-sized, Marshall also finished with 42 points in the paint – 20 of which came in the fourth-quarter rally.
Marshall returns to action at 6 p.m. on Thursday when the Thundering Herd meets Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C.
