Large deficit too much to overcome in 65-61 loss to Chanticleers
CONWAY, S.C. – Marshall's women's basketball team saw a massive fourth quarter rally fall short in a 65-61 loss against Coastal Carolina at HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina on Thursday.
Marshall (9-7, 2-3 SBC) out-scored Coastal Carolina, 27-14, in the fourth quarter, but the Chanticleers hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to escape with the win.
"It was not the night we wanted," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "Obviously, we started really slow and that's something we have to figure out. We didn't have a lot of fight in the first half. I was proud that they figured out how to center themselves and they did dig back pretty strong, but that's not good enough. We can't get down like we keep doing."
The Thundering Herd trailed by as many as 23 for the second-straight game, but cut that deficit to four points on a jumper by Abby Beeman with 1:01 remaining.
Beeman led Marshall with 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss for the Herd. Roshala Scott also hit double-figures with 11 points.
Shanniah Wright also finished with the top effort of her Marshall career, hitting all four of her field goal attempts while scoring 10 points and adding seven rebounds off the bench.
"She's playing really well and earning more time," Kemper said. "She was a big spark tonight (in the comeback) and she had some really tough baskets in there."
Coastal Carolina (7-9, 2-3 SBC) won the contest despite getting just three bench points in the contest. Aja Blount led the Chanticleers with 18 points while adding nine rebounds.
Marshall returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday when the team travels to take on Old Dominion at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
