Marshall rallies from 12 down, but struggles late in 63-56 loss

NORFOLK, Va. – Marshall's women's basketball team could not overcome a tough fourth quarter in a 63-56 loss to Old Dominion at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Marshall falls to 9-8 on the season and 2-4 in Sun Belt Conference action.

"ODU doesn't get beat here a lot," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "Seven (points) in the fourth quarter isn't enough. We got bogged down a bit and let them hit a couple of shots."

Abby Beeman led Marshall with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Roshala Scott added 14 in the loss.

Old Dominion (12-7, 4-2 SBC) out-scored Marshall, 16-7, in the fourth quarter to earn the win after the Thundering Herd hit just two of its 11 shots.

Marshall took a 49-47 lead to the final quarter after coming out of the halftime locker room strong – an aspect that Kemper had emphasized recently.

After trailing throughout the first half, Marshall went on a 12-0 run to take a 45-40 lead in the third quarter. Terah Harness scored five consecutive points to end the run – all of which came after offensive rebounds by the Herd.

Marshall trailed by as many as 12 points in the first quarter after the Monarchs scored the first 10 points of the game.

"We didn't start very well and that's something we have to figure out," Kemper said. "We can't continue to dig insurmountable holes."

As the case has been in recent games, though, Marshall found its groove and rallied back with Roshala Scott scoring seven points during a 14-2 run that saw the Thundering Herd tie the game at 17-all on the first possession of the second quarter.

Marshall returns to action at 6 p.m. on Thursday when the team hosts Troy at Cam Henderson Center.
