Scott's career-high 29 points not enough as Marshall falls by 10

Box Score | Kemper Presser

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Herd women's basketball team dropped an 87-77 result to Troy Thursday evening at the Cam Henderson Center

The Herd are now 9-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Roshala Scott set a new career-high with 29 points with 10 made field goals. Abby Beeman finished with 19 points and a team-leading five rebounds.

"Defensively, you can't win giving up 87," Marshall women's basketball coach Tony Kemper said. "I think it starts with that. When we were playing well, this was a good defensive team. We weren't that tonight, but once again, they shot the ball very well for any team. They were over 50 percent from 3-point range on quite a few attempts."

The Trojans (11-7, 6-1 SBC) entered the game as the nation's leader in rebounds per game. Early on, Marshall kept the visitors in check on the offensive glass, with Troy obtaining just five in the first half.

Marshall trailed by two after the opening quarter with Scott scoring eight points in the opening frame.

An 8-2 run in the second quarter capped by a Mahogany Matthews layup gave MU a three-point lead midway through the second. Troy would finish the opening half on a 14-7 run to take a 40-37 lead at the half.

Troy controlled the third quarter, out-scoring the Herd, 27-11, to seize control. Rebounding was crucial as the Trojans grabbed 12 boards with five second-chance points to distance themselves from Marshall.

"I thought we started well, but physically, we got pretty muscled in the third quarter," Kemper said. "We have to find a way to adjust to that and find ways to get stops."

Marshall fought through the fourth, out-scoring Troy by nine in the fourth with Beeman scoring 14  of her 19 points in the final period.

Marshall returns to face Southern Miss at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the Cam Henderson Center.
