Catlettsburg, Kentucky native honored

DALLAS – Marshall's Savannah Wheeler was named to Conference USA's First Team, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Wheeler, a 5'6" sophomore guard from Catlettsburg, Kentucky, finished the regular season leading the conference in scoring (20.0) and also ranked in the top seven in field goal percentage (second, .427), free throw percentage (fourth, .812), three-pointers per game (sixth, 2.0) and minutes per game (seventh, 34.4). In league games, she also finished eighth with 4.6 defensive rebounds per contest.

Her five scoring outings of 30+ points this season were also a league-high.

With the honor, she becomes just the third Thundering Herd women's player to be named to C-USA's First Team, joining Leah Scott (2016) and Shayna Gore (2019).

This is Wheeler's third C-USA postseason award after earning second-team all-league honors last year and All-Freshman acclaim following the 2019-20 season.

The Thundering Herd (15-12, 10-8 C-USA) will face Rice, the West Division's fourth seed, on Wednesday at noon ET/11 a.m. CT in second round action. The game will be carried on ESPN+.

The Owls (13-12, 8-9) have won six of their last seven games, with the lone setback coming in a 90-80 overtime loss at Louisiana Tech (19-10, 11-7). The Lady Techsters earned the West Division's top seed.

The winner of Wednesday's game plays in Thursday's quarterfinal at noon ET/11 a.m. CT against Charlotte (19-9, 15-3), the East Division's No. 1 seed. That game will also be carried on ESPN+.
