South Charleston native honored
DALLAS, Texas – Marshall senior point guard Aaliyah Dunham was one of five Conference USA student-athletes named to the league's All-Academic Team on Tuesday.
Dunham earned her spot on the team by posting a 4.0 GPA as she works towards her Master's in Business Administration. The graduate transfer has started in all 27 games this season and is third on the team in scoring at 9.1 points per game. She leads the team in assists with 104 to just 43 turnovers, giving her a C-USA-leading 2.42 assist to turnover ratio. That figure is the NCAA's 23rd-highest mark.
Additionally, she has a team-high 53 steals.
The South Charleston, West Virginia native is Marshall's third women's basketball student-athlete to make the league's All-Academic team since Kendra King did it following the 2006-07 campaign. Kristen Mayo earned the honor last season.
"Aaliyah is very deserving of this honor," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "She is in an elite company of student-athletes that perform at a high level, both on and off the floor. Her ability in both areas will carry her far when her court time is over.
"I'm very proud that our program has now produced back-to-back members for the all-academic team. It builds on a strong culture of athletic and academic success."
The Thundering Herd (15-12, 10-8 C-USA) will face Rice, the West Division's fourth seed, on Wednesday at noon ET/11 a.m. CT in second round action. The game will be carried on ESPN+.
The Owls (13-12, 8-9) have won six of their last seven games, with the lone setback coming in a 90-80 overtime loss at Louisiana Tech (19-10, 11-7). The Lady Techsters earned the West Division's top seed.
The winner of Wednesday's game plays in Thursday's quarterfinal at noon ET/11 a.m. CT against Charlotte (19-9, 15-3), the East Division's No. 1 seed. That game will also be carried on ESPN+.
