Full 2022 Schedule
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall volleyball head coach Ari Aganus announced the Herd's 2022 Fall Schedule on Wednesday, in the program's first season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Thundering Herd will host two home tournaments and play a total of 15 matches in the Cam Henderson Center.
Â
Marshall begins the season with two exhibition matches. The first is at Ohio on Aug. 16 and then the Herd will host its Green & White Scrimmage in the Cam on Aug. 20.
Â
The 2022 regular season gets rolling, Aug. 26-27, in the Cam as Marshall hosts the first of its two home tournaments. The Marshall Invitational will feature South Carolina State, Wright State and Evansville. Wright State won 23 contests in 2021 and eventually lost in the semifinal of the Horizon League Tournament. Evansville won 21 games last season and played in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
Â
The Herd next travels to Oxford, Ohio, for the Miami Invitational, Sept. 2-3. Marshall will take on old Mid-American Conference foe Miami (OH), along with Bellarmine and a familiar face from Conference USA in Middle Tennessee. The Herd defeated Miami at home last season, 3-2, and split with the Blue Raiders.
Â
Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center, Sept. 9-10, for the Marshall Invite. The Herd is set to host Charleston Southern, Murray State and Kent State. Murray State won 18 matches a year ago before ending the season in the second round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Â
The Herd hits the road for two more early season, non-conference meetings taking on Furman and USC-Upstate, both in Spartanburg, S.C., Sept. 16-17. Furman went 2-1 in the Southern Conference Tournament before falling to Wofford in the semifinals.
Â
Marshall's final non-conference match of the season is at home on Sept. 27 versus Eastern Kentucky.
Â
The Herd's first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference will see Marshall play on the road against Old Dominion (Sept. 22-23), Troy (Oct. 6-7), Appalachian State (Oct. 21-22) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 28-29). The Herd's home conference matches are with Georgia State (Sept. 29-30), Georgia Southern (Oct. 14-15), James Madison (Nov. 4-5) and Arkansas State (Nov. 11-12) to end the regular season.
Â
Coastal (19 wins), Troy (18 wins), JMU (17 wins), Georgia Southern (17 wins) and Arkansas State (15 wins) all had at least 15 victories last season. Troy participated in the NIVC and went 1-1.
Â
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is set for Nov. 16-20 in Foley, Alabama.
