Thundering Herd athletics is only SBC school in top-100 nationally
In the recently-released rankings, Marshall finished with 109 points.
That total was also good for No. 52 overall, making Marshall the only team in the Sun Belt to finish in the top-100 nationally.
"We want an athletic department where everyone knows everything matters," Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears said. "Having comprehensive competitive success is critical to creating that belief system. We will use the Directors' Cup to assess ourselves. This is a great start for us. Having the highest ranking out of the Sun Belt schools is our expectation."
Marshall's top performing sports included men's soccer, who earned 64 points for being an NCAA Tournament participant that advanced to the Sweet 16.
The Thundering Herd football program also made its mark, finishing 9-4 on the season and earning a 28-14 win over Buffalo in the Myrtle Beach Bowl, which capped a five-game winning streak to end the season. That performance netted Marshall athletics an additional 45 points in the standings.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings are the benchmark for overall athletics performance at the collegiate level. The seasonal breakdown includes fall, winter and spring sports.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings for winter sports, as well as the cumulative standings, will be announced in early April following the completion of men's and women's basketball season.
The final standings of the 2022-23 year will be announced in June.
