Herd Women Rally on the Road to Defeat ULM

Third victory of the season for Marshall women's basketball when trailing by double digits in the second half

Box Score | Kemper Presser

MONROE, La. –  The Thundering Herd did it again, rallying from down as much as 13 in the third quarter to win on the road at ULM, 61-59.  It was Marshall's third win when trailing by double digits in the second half this season.

Abby Beeman scored a game-high 17 points with eight assists, including the game-winning dish to Mahogany Matthews. Matthews finished with the game-winning score and game-sealing block to win the game for Marshall (11-9, 4-5 SBC).

Freshman Sydni Scott scored a career-high 15 points, making five triples on a night where the Herd struggled to score early.

"It's good to win on nights where it's ugly," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "Emma Merriweather really changed the game, she was tough inside, really changed a lot of our shots and made it hard to go inside. I thought we played with more gusto and swagger in the second half and found a way. Did just enough good things to make it a happy plane ride up to Jonesboro.

Marshall shot just 19 percent in the first half, falling into a 13 point halftime deficit. ULM's (6-14, 2-7 SBC) transfer center had eight of her game-high 15 rebounds in the first half.

The Herd thundered back in the third, outscoring the hosts 24-11 out of the break. Five consecutive points from freshman Meredith Maier followed by a Beeman triple brought MU to within two. A Peyton Ilderton three would give the Herd the lead before the Warhawks tied it heading to the fourth.

ULM reeled off nine in a row to regain a sizable advantage midway through the fourth, before Coach Kemper's comeback artists went to work again. Seven straight points from Sydni Scott brought Marshall to within one.

Trailing by one, a Matthews block, followed by the go-ahead layup by the York, Pennsylvania native, succeeded by another block and sealing free throws gave the Herd the crucial road victory.

The Herd travel to Arkansas State for a road contest against the Red Wolves. Tip is at 3 p.m. ET.
