Handlogten records fifth double-double
Box Score | D'Antoni Press Conference
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (12-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) rallied in the second half, but fell on the road, 81-76, to the hot shooting Georgia Southern Eagles (10-6, 3-0 Sun Belt) on Thursday night in Statesboro, Georgia.
"We didn't come ready to play," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after loss. "We got outrebounded (by 14). That just tells me we're not quick."
With 22 points, fifth-year senior Taevion Kinsey led all student-athletes on a 50-percent (8-for-16) shooting night. He finished with six assists on his stat line, tied with redshirt senior Andrew Taylor for the team-lead. Taylor also contributed 18 points in the contest.
Freshman Micah Handlogten collected a double-double as he tallied 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The native of Huntersville, North Carolina, made six of his seven attempts from the field.
After trailing by as many as 19 points, 47-28, with a minute to go in the first half, the Herd made a big push in the second half. Handlogten tallied six consecutive points from the 2:59 mark to 1:06 to cut the deficit to just two points, 78-76.
However, MU missed a pair of shots in the final minute, and the Eagles made three free throws to hold off the visitors.
GS shot 70 percent (21-for-30) from the field in the first half en route to its 19-point advantage.
Notes
This is the first time this season Marshall has fell in consecutive contests.
Both Kinsey and Taylor have scored 10 or more points in all 16 of the Herd's contests this season. Kinsey now has nine games with 20 or more points this season.
Handlogten's double-double marked his fifth of the season in his ninth double-figure rebounding effort.
MU was outrebounded, 42-28, for just the fifth time this season.
