MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Marshall University swimming and diving team finished day one at the West Virginia State Games in second place with five first-place finishes in the first 10 events. The Herd sits at 792 points behind West Virginia's 803.

"I was really pleased with our team tonight," Herd swimming and diving head coach Ian Walsh said. "It is always tough coming off a three-and-a-half-hour bus ride and competing the same day. There were a little nerves through the first relay, but we really caught momentum following the 1000 Freestyle."

Marshall's biggest event was the 200 Freestyle. The Herd took four of the top five spots in the event with Molly Warner winning her first collegiate event with a time of 1:52.15 as Madeline Hart took second at 1:54.58.

The Herd finished first and second in the 100 Backstroke with Mia McBride winning the event (57.03) and Gabrielle Ivey taking second (57.22).

MU's other first-place finishes came in the 1000 Freestyle by Eszter Laban (10:26.61), Klava Katayama, Audrey West, Molly Warner, Madeline Hart (3:30.85) in the 400 Freestyle Relay and Grace Kelsheimer in the 3-Meter Dive (244.05). Kelsheimer also took second in the 1-Meter Dive (237.90).

The Herd had six additional top-three performances in addition to the placers listed above.

"We won five of the 10 events today and showcased our depth in all of our events," Walsh said. "I thought the women brought incredible energy and poured into their teammates throughout the session. Day two will be a great test to see who can come back and perform at their best following a high-energy evening."
