NEW ORLEANS – No. 4 Herd Men's Soccer swept the final set of Sun Belt Conference weekly awards with Gabriel Perrotta being named SBC Defensive Player of the Week and Alexander Stjernegaard being named SBC Offensive Player of the Week on Thursday, as announced by the league office.
It is the first weekly honor for both student-athletes and the first defensive conference weekly honor for The Herd. MU captured six of the 11 conference's weekly offensive honors this season.
Perrotta brought his shutout total to an SBC-best 8.5 after a 2-0 win over South Carolina on Tuesday. The Paraguayan goalkeeper made four saves, including three in the first half, to help Marshall clinch the SBC Regular Season Championship.
Stjernegaard, a native of Denmark, tallied his first goal of the season and an assist in victory over the Gamecocks. The midfielder's strike came on a free kick in the 51st that he dipped over the wall and into the goal for the eventual game winner. Stjernegaard then registered his assist off a corner kick in the 69th minute that Braian Amaro headed into the six-yard box to find Alvaro Garcia-Pascual for his first multi-goal contribution match of the season.
The No. 4 Herd is set to begin the 2023 SBC Men's Soccer Tournament as the first-overall seed against the eighth seeded Old Dominion Monarchs on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hoops Family Field. Buy your tickets now by clicking here!
