HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 4 Marshall University Men's Soccer team (15-2) registered its 10th shutout of the season, 2-0, to defeat the Old Dominion Monarchs (5-7-5) in the first round of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Sunday at Hoops Family Field.

"It was definitely a battle," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I just want to say congratulations to Alan Dawson, their coach, on a wonderful career. Tonight was his last match, and his teams are always tough. Tonight, they were quite tough."

In the 60th minute, Matthew Bell sent a through ball to Pablo Simon, who snuck his shot past the ODU keeper for his sixth goal of the season and made it 1-0 Herd. Bell registered his 11th assist of the season to break the single-season program record.

"It doesn't mean anything; records are meant to be broken," Bell said. "I'm here to win and if we win everything and I can get a record then I am happy with that, but if I get a record and we don't win everything, it's a bad season for me."

MU sealed the match in the 85th minute when Agustin Iusem tallied his first goal of the season on an assist from Marco Silva, his third of the season.

"I thought every time we attacked they ended our attack with a foul, it was kind of a tactic to make it more of a battle and a war," Grassie commented. "I thought our guys rose to the challenge, particularly in the second half. I thought we were ready for the fight. First half we played okay football but we figured it out in the second half. Matthew played tremendously well trying to find the pocket and the rest of the guys put in a good effort to fight and win the second balls."

Gabriel Perrotta made a season-high five saves in the contest with his three saves in the first half, seventh, 20th and 42nd minutes, were crucial in keeping the Monarchs off the board and the game tied 0-0 at the break. The graduate student and native of Paraguay brought his shutout total to 9.5 this season.

Bell, Iusem and Simon each fired a team-high two shots on goal in the first-round contest.
