Herd rides doubles momentum to 6-1 win over ULM
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – Marshall tennis got off to a successful start in its Sun Belt Conference debut on Saturday morning at 7827 Tennis Center.
The Thundering Herd quickly earned the doubles point and took that momentum into the singles matches, earning a 6-1 win over ULM to give the team its first victory within its new conference.
"It was good to get going again and good to play our first Sun Belt match," Marshall tennis coach John Mercer said. "It's nice to be in a conference where we are playing
a schedule. It was a good start."
Playing just its second match in a three-week stretch, Marshall (6-4, 1-0 SBC) showed no rust as it jumped out early to take the lead over the WarHawks.
In doubles, the No. 2 tandem of Aisling McGrane and Sophia Hurrion took a 6-2 win over ULM's Oleksandra Balaba and Giovanna Pereira before the No. 1 doubles team of Emma Vanderheyden and Johanna Strom clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 result over ULM's Alessandra Anghel and Angela Del Campo Suarez.
From there, Marshall made quick work of the WarHawks, clinching the match in less than 90 minutes with three consecutive straight-set wins.
The No. 3 singles match saw Marshall's Doroteja Joksovic find a rhythm late in the first set to dominate a 6-3, 6-0 win over ULM's Alice Klinteby.
Soon after, Vanderheyden took the No. 1 singles match, out-classing Anghel in a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Strom then secured the match for the Herd with her own 6-2, 6-2 win over Balaba at No. 2 singles.
"We had some good performances today," Mercer said. "I thought Doro played really well once she got going and doubles was good."
Marshall also got wins at No. 4 singles from McGrane, who won a second-set tiebreak to cap a 6-4, 7-6 win over Suarez, and No. 6 singles as Hurrion topped ULM's Mariam Hatem with a 6-1, 6-0 effort.
Marshall's tennis team returns to action at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning when they face Arkansas State at 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.
