Herd Tennis Sweeps Red Wolves, Opens SBC Play 2-0

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (7-4, 2-0 Sun Belt) used a 7-0 sweep of the Arkansas State Red Wolves (1-7, 0-2) on Sunday to start its opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference action 2-0.

"It was a good weekend. I'm excited about it," Herd tennis head coach John Mercer said about starting conference play 2-0. "It's fun to play in the Sun Belt. I thought we did a good job today. We focused pretty well after a quick turnaround. Looking forward to our next match at Radford on Wednesday and playing Old Dominion next Friday in our next Sun Belt contest."

The Herd started out hot in doubles with the team's number one pairing of Emma Vanderheyden and Johanna Strom taking their contest 6-0. Aisling McGrane and Sophia Hurrion followed to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph at number two doubles.

Marshall didn't drop a set in singles action. Vanderheyden sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number one singles.

Strom took her 10th consecutive singles match of the spring without dropping a single game at number two singles.
