Winter rankings show Herd is 55 spots higher than closest SBC team
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Athletics stands atop the Sun Belt Conference in the 2022-23 LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings following the release of the Division I winter standings by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
The results, which were released this week by LEARFIELD, show that Marshall leads the way with 109.0 points, which is more than double that of any other Sun Belt Conference member, except for South Alabama (60.50).
"When we talk about doing things 'The Herd Way', this will be our Standard," Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears said. "We will continue to prioritize being the best in the Sun Belt Conference. We are not yet where we want to be nationally, but being the best in the Sun Belt will continue to be our expectation."
Marshall, who is ranked 103rd nationally, is also 55 spots higher in the national standings than South Alabama.
It is the second consecutive season in which Marshall has led the Sun Belt Conference. Marshall was also the leader following the release of the Fall 2022 standings as well.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today.
Through the course of the year, Directors' Cup points are awarded, based on a school's finish in up to 18 sports – nine men and nine women – in NCAA Championship competition.
Official standings for the 2022-23 year will be published by NACDA upon the completion of the spring sports season.
