GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – The Marshall University men's basketball team was named as part of the eight-team field for the 2023 Cayman Islands Classic Men's Basketball Tournament, as announced on Monday by Caymax Sports Ltd.
"We're looking forward going to a tournament that has some group of five and power five schools," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "It will help us in recruiting. It will be a good bonding experience for our team being together for five days in a nice atmosphere that will be competitive. I want to thank our Athletic Director Christian Spears for allowing us to do it. It's what good programs that are supported by the athletic department do. Christian stepped up and we're on our way. The kids are going to enjoy it, it's good for the program and I hope to bring back three victories."
Joining the Thundering Herd at the tournament are Drake, Loyola Marymount, Oakland, Stephen F. Austin, Utah State and Wake Forest.
The fifth edition of the event will tip-off Nov. 19-21 at The John Gray Gymnasium, just minutes away from world famous Seven Mile Beach.
"Our three-day tournament features an extremely competitive field and we are excited to watch these teams compete for the Cayman Islands Classic championship title," said Joe Wright, Chief Executive Officer of Caymax Sports Ltd. "Our tournament has gained a reputation as a first-class event amongst the coaches that have played here. Visiting the Cayman Islands and enjoying the world-class beaches and hotels will be a great treat for the teams and fans."
Marshall is coming off a 24-win 2022-23 regular season as head coach D'Antoni prepares for his 10th season at the helm in Huntington.
