Department’s overall Multi-Year APR rating at 987; 10 programs at 985 or higher

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Athletics saw four of its programs finish with perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for 2022-23, the university announced on Thursday.

As a whole, Marshall Athletics finished with a 987 Multi-Year APR rating while 10 of the department's 15 programs finished above a 985 in Multi-Year APR.

The data was released as part of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report earlier this week.

"Maintaining eligibility, retaining our student-athletes and then graduating them is always going to be our goal," Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears said. "The fact that we sit now at 987 is exceptional. The Academic Progress Rate is a metric that is constantly evolving and we will all have to do much more to continue that level of success, given the new realities of college athletics."

Programs that finished with a perfect 1,000 APR included Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf, Women's Tennis and Women's Swimming and Diving.

In addition to those four teams, programs finishing with a rating of at least 985 included Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Women's Basketball, Volleyball, Softball and Women's Soccer.

All of Marshall's 15 programs finished with a rating of at least 960 – 30 points more than the NCAA threshold of 930.

Implemented in 2003 by the NCAA, the APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The formula uses a team-based metric that accounts for eligibility and retention of each student-athlete.

The 2022-23 Multi-Year APR is comprised of data submitted to the NCAA by each member institution for the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 years.
