Thunder In The Mountains Press Conference Set For 10 a.m. Monday in Charleston

Women’s Tennis event co-hosted by Marshall, WVU from Sept. 22-24
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – There will be a press conference at 10 a.m. on Monday to discuss the 2023 "Thunder in the Mountains" women's tennis tournament, according to tournament director Rusty Webb.
The press conference will take place at Schoenbaum Tennis Courts, located adjacent to Kanawha City Recreation Center, and will feature Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin, as well as the tennis coaches from Marshall University and West Virginia University, who co-host the event.
Monday's press conference will discuss the event, as well as reveal the other two Division I teams who will be competing along with Marshall and WVU in the "round robin" style tournament that will take place at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts from Sept. 22-24.
The event brings together each of the Mountain State's two Division I universities for an exciting weekend of tennis action in the state's capital city.
The 2023 version will be the fourth in the event's history in a five-year span. The 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, but returned in 2021 and has seen success in its early history.
Webb is intent on making it the marquee tennis event in the Mountain State each year while building the sport of tennis to new heights.
"I want this to be a destination event – an event attended by all within the state and region," Webb said. "To that end, I'm inviting all middle school and high school teams in W.Va. to attend. We also plan to transport children from all the city's recreation centers in an effort to introduce them to this sport."
