HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University had 212 of its student-athletes honored by the Sun Belt Conference with Academic Awards, as released by the SBC this week.

Three of Marshall's athletic programs – Men's Basketball, Women's Golf and Women's Track and Field – all top the Sun Belt Conference in Team GPA.

"I continue to be impressed with our student-athletes' ability to successfully balance the rigorous demands of academics, practice, competition, travel and service to our community," said Beatrice Crane Banford, Marshall's Senior Women's Administrator and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Olympic Sports. "Having so many of our student-athletes receive academic accolades from the Sun Belt shows that our head coaches are committed to academic excellence and that they have prioritized the most important things for our student-athletes."

Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears said the announcement continues the successful standard that has been set in both academics and athletics for the Sun Belt Conference.

"Building productive members of our society who bring impact to the communities they serve after they leave Marshall is truly our calling and our mission," Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears said. "At the end of the day, the graduation success and academic achievement of our student-athletes is of paramount importance.

"It is and will always be about helping a young person reach their full potential. So, how do you know when that's truly happening? This is how you know: recognition from our conference on just how well our teams, student-athletes, coaches and faculty are doing to augment their potential. Special thanks to our academic support staff who simply pour into our student-athletes and provide outstanding support and accountability."

One of the most impressive figures in the Sun Belt's academic release involved Marshall having 16 players across nine sports who earned the 1A FAR Academic Award, which is given to student-athletes who earned their Bachelor's Degree from Sept. 2022 to Aug. 1, 2023 and maintained a 3.8 grade point average or better. Participation in at least two years of athletic competition at an FBS school was also a requirement for the award.

Of Marshall's 212 total student-athletes honored, 134 of them were named to the Commissioner's List, which honors student-athletes who maintain a 3.5 grade point average or better during the 2022-23 academic year.

Another 78 Marshall student-athletes were named to the SBC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes those who maintained a 3.0 to 3.49 grade point average for the academic year.

According to the Sun Belt release, nearly 3,000 students were recognized for their academic achievement this year with 1,621 named to the Commissioner' List and 1,191 names to the Academic Honor Roll. There were 140 student-athletes across the member schools who earned the 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award.

"We celebrate the academic achievements of these remarkable student-athletes," Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill said. "We're extremely proud of their ability to shine in academics while competing in their sports at the highest level."

All Sun Belt Conference programs in beach volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball boasted an average GPA of 3.0 or better.
