HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Behind a goal from Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos and a UCF own goal, No. 6 Marshall Men's Soccer team (8-1-2, 3-0-1 SBC) recorded a 2-0 shutout Sunday evening in Orlando, Florida, to down the UCF Knights (3-4-3, 1-3-0 SBC).
Goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic moved to 6-0 with his third shutout of the season.
"I thought the lads excecuted our game plan in the first half almost to perfection," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "The first half went just as we had planned in our in-possession phase. Definitely some work for us to do getting into attacking transition. The second half, we really showed our fight and squad depth. It was hot humid conditions after a late day of travel, I'm very proud of how we continued to battle. We could've kept the ball a little better, but we showed a lot of heart again this week."
The Herd wasted little time to get on the board. Ryan Holmes sent a pass down the right wing to Loic Sany Kong. Sany Kong then found Rodrigues dos Santos, who directed the ball into the net for his team leading fifth goal of the season just 75 seconds into the match. Holmes and Sany Kong both registered their second assists of the season.
Then in the 24th minute, Tarik Pannholzer sent in a pass trying to find Aymane Sordo in the six-yard box. However, a Knight defender directed the ball into the goal for an own goal to give MU a 2-0 lead.
Janjic then stepped up in goal to keep UCF off the board. The keeper made his first save of the contest in the 10th minute.
He followed up with a pair of saves in the second half in the 64th and 67th minutes, respectively, to keep the Knights of the board and help Marshall to three points on the road.
