PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team began its knockout meet against the Duquesne Dukes on Friday in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
"Traveling the day of competition is always challenging. Our women did a phenomenal job of hopping off the bus and competing at a really high-level tonight," Herd Swimming and Diving Head Coach Ian Walsh said. "Duquesne and their staff did a great job of making a fun environment with a different meet format. The event list really challenged our women to race and execute, especially when they were fatigued."
In the meet format, there was no scoring today with top individuals advancing to the scoring round on Saturday.
In the 1,000 Freestyle, Eszter Laban (10:29.15) and Preslava Tosheva (10:35.71) advanced to the scoring round with Madeline Hart (2:04.05) in 200 Butterfly, Mia McBride (2:07.59) in the 200 Backstroke, Kseniia Luniushina (23.57) in the 50 Freestyle, Paige Banton (2:19.73) in 200 Breaststroke, Molly Warner (1:53.18) in the 200 Freestyle and Audrey West (2:09.38) in the 200 Individual Medley.
"Some performances that stood out tonight were Madeline's 200 fly, Paige's 200 breast, and Kseniia's 50 freestyle," Walsh said. "Madeline did a great job of taking out the race boldly and managing the backend really well. Paige's race was incredibly consistent and executed one of her best 200 breast strokes in-season the past few years. Kseniia continues to figure out ways to gradually improve her execution in the 50. She took one step forward today and the time reflected that."
On Saturday with the exception of the 50 Freestyle, the other races will be contested in half the distance with first place winning 18 points and second place taking eight points.
"The team had great energy tonight and they are excited to carry the momentum they built into the scored session tomorrow."
