Zubek will champion student-athlete experience, serve as NIL liaison

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears has announced the hiring of John Zubek as the Associate Athletic Director of Compliance.

Zubek comes to Marshall from Phoenix, Arizona, where he most recently worked in the legal sector at the state and business levels after working in Compliance at Arizona State previously.

"It is a privilege to join 'The Herd,'" Zubek said. "Marshall is a special place with talented staff and student-athletes, remarkable tradition and passionate supporters. This is an exciting and challenging time to be part of college athletics, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help navigate the current and upcoming changes to college athletics to keep Marshall ahead of the curve."

"We are extremely excited to add John to our team," Spears said. "John can do it all and we are fortunate that he has chosen to join us as our Associate AD. He will be on Senior Staff and he will embrace the leadership role he plays in our department."

At Marshall, Zubek will be involved in all the inter-workings of Marshall Athletics. In addition to compliance responsibilities, Zubek will help champion Marshall's student-athlete experience, which includes oversight of Marshall's Holistic student-athlete programming and serving as a liaison with The Thunder Trust – Marshall's NIL collective.

In his role, Zubek will also report to the Office of the General Counsel, led by Toney Stroud, Marshall's Chief Legal Officer and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Corporate Relations. This partnership will utilize the legal and compliance background of Zubek to strengthen the synergy between Marshall Athletics and Marshall University.

"We are excited to welcome John and his wife, Samantha, to the Marshall family," Stroud said. "John's experience in both the legal profession and athletics realm will provide a major benefit to Marshall University and Marshall Athletics as we continue to build for our future and ensure a transformational experience for our student-athletes."

"I want to thank Christian and Toney for considering me for the position, and for putting together an incredible compliance and holistic programming team with Chris (Molina) and Jaylene (Berrien) that will allow me to hit the ground running," Zubek said. "."

Zubek is a 2016 graduate of Northern Illinois where he also served as a team captain and was named to the 2016 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given to the nation's top catcher.

He later went on to Arizona State where he graduated magna cum laude and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law in 2019.

Zubek will be joined in Huntington by his wife, Samantha.

"I could not do this without the support of my wife, Samantha," Zubek said. "Together, we are excited to begin our journey to Huntington and become part of the Tri-State community, which we can already tell is filled with incredible people who are passionate about Marshall Athletics! Go Herd!"
