HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (2-1) registered a 14-point, 77-63, win over Southern Indiana (0-3) Monday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
"We talked about getting into the paint and making sound decisions," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said. "We took 16 (threes) tonight. The flow of the game there was a lot of fouls. We shot 50 free throws, and they shot 36. That's a lot of fouls. So I think it's the flow of the game (for fewer threes taken tonight). I say time and time again we have to play that way in order for us to be successful."
Leading a trio of double-figure scorers, Dezayne Mingo tallied 19 points on a 6-for-10 shooting night adding three steals and three rebounds to his stat line. Nate Martin followed with 18 points and five rebounds, including his first two career makes from three-point range.
Obinna Anochili-Killen closed out the trio with 14 points and a team-high eight board while Ryan Nutter dished out a game-high seven assists.
The Screaming Eagles hit the opening bucket of the game 23 seconds into the contest, but that would be the visitors only lead of the game. Martin answered with the first two made threes of his college career to go with a Mingo layup to grab an 8-2 advantage at the 17:44 mark.
"Credit to Nate, credit to Ryan Taylor, who's on staff. They've put in a lot of time in the gym together. They did in the summer. They do everyday after practice. Nate's earned the right to take those," Jackson said.
The Herd eventually closed out the final 13:23 with 27 of the opening half's final 36 points, with three runs of five or more points. Will Moore hit the final jumper of the first half to send MU into the break up by 19 points, 38-19. Marshall shot 53.8 percent from the field (14-for-26) while holding Southern Indiana to just 26.3 percent (5-for-19) shooting in the first half.
A pair of makes from the charity stripe gave The Herd a 21-point lead, 40-19, for its largest of the game. Although USI cut Marshall's advantage to nine points, 57-48, with 7:35 left in the contest, The Herd held on for a double-figure victory in front of the home crowd.
