Marshall’s J.J. Roberts Named SBC Special Teams Player Of The Week

Roberts’ FG block changed momentum of Herd’s 31-19 win over Coastal Carolina
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall redshirt senior defensive back J.J. Roberts was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
Roberts earned the award after jumping through the line and blocking a Coastal Carolina field goal attempt that Jacobie Henderson returned 65 yards for a Marshall touchdown.
The block came with Coastal Carolina looking to tie the game in the second quarter, but instead of the tie game, the blocked kick return for a touchdown gave the Thundering Herd a two-score lead that it would not relinquish in a 31-19 win over the Chanticleers.
Roberts' block and Henderson's subsequent return was the first time in 14 years that Marshall blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown – the last being in 2010 when the Herd did so against Ohio State.
In addition to the crucial blocked kick for a touchdown, Roberts had 12 tackles and four pass breakups, which gives him an SBC-leading 13 on the season – a figure that is also No. 10 in FBS.
For Roberts, it was the second time he has been honored in the 2024 season as a Sun Belt Player of the Week, having earned the honor on Sept. 30 following his defensive efforts in a win over Western Michigan.
Roberts is currently second on Marshall's team with 75 tackles on the season.
