HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's women's basketball team dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener Sunday afternoon to Texas State, 60-48.
The Herd (5-7, 0-1 SBC) led by as much as 15 in the first half, but saw the Bobcats (7-4, 1-0 SBC) rally with a 19-point swing in the second half as MU shot 20 percent after halftime.
Aislynn Hayes finished with 17 points to lead the Herd, the only MU player with double figures. The Herd connected on four triples in the game.
"Obviously that was a heartbreaking and really disappointing result for us," Head Coach Juli Fulks said.
"We could probably go back and find eight or nine possessions that were just mental mistakes that we're a little bit better than. At the end of the day we were 4-of-28 from the three-point line. That's a key way to score and we never want to be a team that lives and dies by the three, but when we weren't getting them to fall today, we were struggling on the boards because we were shooting early and that makes it hard to get rebounds. Then I thought we pressed and got a little nervous when it got close. Those are the things we can work on and obviously we are a much better shooting team than that."

On the plus-note for the Herd, Marshall had its best performance of the season from the free throw line, shooting 15-of-18 (83.3%).
The Herd will have its opportunity to respond as the team makes its first conference road trip of the year. Marshall leaves New Year's Day for a pair of contests at Arkansas State and Troy. The trip opener from Jonesboro, Ark. will be at 8 p.m. eastern, 7 locally on Thursday, Jan. 2 between MU and A-State.
