Early Lead Falters on the Road for MU Women’s Basketball

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Herd women's basketball team (5-8, 0-2 SBC) saw Arkansas State (5-7, 1-1 SBC) shoot a blistering 78 percent from deep in the 4th quarter in a 66-56 defeat Thursday evening in Jonesboro.
Marshall had an 8-0 run to start the game and led 20-9 after one. Coach Juli Fulks's Herd led by as much as 14 but MU saw the hosts' chisel away at the lead, culminating to shoot 7-of-9 from the three-point line in the 4th completing its comeback.
To build the early lead, Marshall connected on four made-threes in the opening 10 minutes. But from the second quarter forward, MU made just two of its final 22 three-pointers attempted.
"I think it's a game of makes and misses, and it's hard to pull out wins when you're struggling to get the ball to go in," Coach Fulks said. "I thought there were plenty of possessions where we battled. We went into halftime ahead and for the second straight game we had a tough first two minutes of the third quarter and we worked on that and we had set plays which ended up being a couple turnovers and got them momentum."
"We're going to spend the night making sure we have a good plan for Troy and keep trying to find some ways to get [the team] some easy baskets when we're not shooting it very well."

In a statistically even game, Marshall won the turnover battle decisively, forcing 22 takeaways compared to its 14. The Herd scored 30 points in the paint compared to the Red Wolves' 18.
CC Mays led the team with 18 points, her most in a game since the season opener at Toledo when she finished with 20.
The Herd will continue its road trip Saturday at Troy. Tip from Trojan Arena is at 4:33 p.m. eastern, 3:33 local.
