First-half JMU run foils Herd’s upset attempt in 81-64 loss

Box Score | Coach D'Antoni Post-Game Press Conference

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Marshall Men's Basketball saw its season come to an end on Saturday night in an 81-64 loss to No. 2 seed James Madison.

With the loss, the Herd's season closes at 13-20 after the loss in the SBC quarterfinals.

"First of all, it was a pleasure to coach these guys," Marshall Men's Basketball Coach Dan D'Antoni said. "You hate to end on a losing note. I appreciate all the time they gave me. They've been good for Marshall. Today is a tough day."

Obinna Anochili-Killen led Marshall with 15 points while Nate Martin finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the season. Kevon Voyles added 12 points in the loss.

Offensive rebounding proved to be a difference in the game for James Madison, who had 15 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points.

After trailing by 15 at halftime, Marshall cut the James Madison lead to 71-60 following a jumper by Anochili-Killen with 3:42 left, but the Herd missed an opportunity to get it into single-digits and JMU hit a 3-pointer on the other end to put the game away.

Early on, Marshall and James Madison battled for control, but the Herd went cold from the floor during a five-minute stretch of the first half as James Madison used its athleticism and second-chance looks to go on a 23-4 run, which led to a 44-29 lead at the half.

"In the first half, we just hit that spot where they were more physical," D'Antoni said. "They came and got a lot of second shots and we didn't retrieve rebounds and they ran on a (big) run. Other than that, the game was pretty even, but you've got to give them credit for their efforts."

With the loss, Marshall says goodbye and thank you to its seniors: Voyles, Kam Curfman, Goran Miladinovic and Marko Sarenac.
