HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Football head coach Charles Huff announced the promotion of two of his assistant coaches on Monday.
Running backs coach Telly Lockette is now also the Associate Head Coach while safeties coach Bob Shoop has added Assistant Head Coach to his title.
Lockette has been with Marshall throughout Huff's tenure, coaching the Thundering Herd running backs to success in each campaign.
In all three seasons under Lockette's tutelage, Marshall has had a running back rank in the top-25 nationally in rushing with the Herd possessing a 1,000-yard rusher in each year.
Rasheen Ali, who was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2024 NFL Draft, was responsible for two of those seasons. In 2021, Ali finished No. 10 nationally with 1,401 yards while tying for No. 1 in FBS in rushing touchdowns with 23. He followed that up in 2023 by rushing for 1,135 yards and 15 touchdowns despite missing one full game and being limited in three others.
In 2022, Khalan Laborn finished with 1,513 yards rushing with 16 touchdowns – both of which were No. 10 in FBS. Laborn signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a UDFA in 2023 and later saw time with the Edmonton Elks and Toronto Argonauts of the CFL.
"Coach Lockett has been a part of our staff since we got here and has been a consistent presence not only on the field and in recruiting, but in our community as well," Huff said. "His experience and expertise in this profession is second to none. Combining that with his ability to connect with all of our staff and players to keep continuity and consistency running high gives him the ability to support me and the vision of our program."
Shoop arrived at Marshall prior to the 2023 season, serving as an analyst for Huff during the season before being promoted to safeties coach in January.
A decorated four-decade coaching veteran, Shoop has served as defensive coordinator and/or safeties coach at several Power Five programs, including Mississippi State (2018-19), Tennessee (2016-17), Penn State (2014-15) and Vanderbilt (2011-13).
Shoop was also defensive backs coach in the professional ranks for the USFL Champion Birmingham Stallions in 2023.
"Coach Shoop has been coaching at a high level for a very long time, and his knowledge and experience is truly valued and respected by our entire organization," Huff said. "Having him as a sounding board for me will allow us to continue to close the gap on the top teams in college football in all areas."
Marshall Football is just over one month away from starting its 2024 preseason practice in anticipation for its 2024 season opener against Stony Brook, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Â
