Herd Tennis Hires JJ Mercer as Assistant Coach

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Tennis Head Coach John Mercer announced the hiring of JJ Mercer as an Assistant Coach for the program on Wednesday.

JJ Mercer joins The Herd after a decorated career with the Kentucky Wildcats.

"I'm very excited to have JJ join the staff," Herd Tennis Head Coach John Mercer said. "His experience and knowledge of the program and his experience of playing at the very top level of collegiate tennis and his professional tour results are all invaluable qualities that will make him a tremendous asset for our program. We are all looking forward to a great season!"

JJ started his career collegiate career at Ohio State before transferring to Kentucky for the 2021-22 season. Moving to No. 1 doubles for the 2023-24 season, JJ and his partner Joshua Lapadat peaked at fourth in the ITA Doubles Rankings and earned the third seed in the 2024 NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Tournament along with being named an ITA All-American in doubles. The duo combined to go 16-6 in dual matches, including 3-0 at the SEC Men's Tournament, earning All-SEC First Team and All-Tournament Team honors.

JJ helped the Wildcats to three consecutive quarterfinal appearances in the NCAA Tournament with the team taking at least 26 matches in each of the three seasons. Mercer was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2022 ITA Indoor Nationals in the second doubles positions along with being on the SEC Spring Academic Honor and College Sports Communicators Academic All-District.

During his first season with the Wildcats in 2021-22, JJ reached No. 89 in the ITA Singles rankings during the fall.
