HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Former Marshall Men's Golf standout Christian Brand advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2024 U.S. Amateur on Wednesday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Brand defeated South Africa's Christiaan Maas, 2 and 1, on Wednesday to stake his claim as one of 32 golfers still alive for the coveted Havemeyer Trophy, given to the annual U.S. Amateur winner.

"We are so happy for Christian!" Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "He was a great golfer at Marshall and his performance at the W.Va. Amateur was record-setting. He has continued from that strong tournament all the way through the summer. We are looking forward to rooting him on in the Round of 32!"

Brand, who earned an automatic qualifier after winning the 105th W.Va. Amateur by a record 21 strokes, found his groove in the middle of his round against Maas, who was seeded No. 31. Brand won five of six holes to turn a 2-down deficit after No. 5 into a 3-up advantage after the par-5 11th hole.

From there, the lead never went below 2-up and Brand put the victory away with a par on the par-3 17th hole.

Brand, who was seeded No. 34, now advances to Thursday's Round of 32 to meet either No. 2 seed Ethan Evans or No. 63 seed Omar Tejeira Jaen in the morning session. If he wins that match, he will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Charleston, W.Va., native qualified for the Round of 64 after finishing tied for 32nd place following two rounds of stroke play in which he recorded nine birdies and an eagle.

Marshall Men's Golf earned a unique distinction of being a program to boast of three representatives out of only 312 players to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Amateur.

In addition to Brand, incoming senior transfer J.F. Aber and former golfer Davey Jude also qualified. Aber put up an impressive showing, shooting Even par through two rounds of stroke play while finishing just one stroke from qualifying for Match Play. Jude was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Amateur due to an injury.
