No. 6 Marshall Men’s Soccer Registers Clean Sheet Against Gardner-Webb

Goals from Simon, Sany Kong; Janjic second shutout of the season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With a 2-0 victory over Gardner-Webb (3-1-1), the No. 6 Marshall Men's Soccer team (4-1) moved its winning streak to three on Tuesday night at Hoops Family Field. The clean sheet marked the team's 15th in its last 26 contests with goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic picking up his second of the season.
Pablo Simon and Loic Sany Kong each scored their second goal of the season. Alexander Stjernegaard tallied a pair of assists as Alex Bamford registered his first of the season.
"That was a tough win," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I thought that was fantastic. I thought that was the best team we've played this year. They were very organized. They gave us their best shot. I thought it was very good tactics, a well-coached team, and our guys had to solve it."
The Herd saw its first three shots go off target in the contest. In the 43rd minute, the ball bounced off the heads off multiple players on both squads. Then Stjernegaard headed to the feet of Simon. A couple yards outside the 18-yard box, Simon smashed a volley off his right foot and curled it into the top of the goal to give MU a 1-0 lead into halftime.
"It was a fantastic strike," Grassie said about Simon's goal. "He filled in at right back today. It's the first time he played there. At the next level, I think he'd have a great shot at being a right back."
Janjic made a crucial save in the in the 55th minute to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs off the board and Marshall's lead at 1-0.
15 minutes later The Herd was setting up for a corner as Sany Kong entered as a substitute. Stjernegaard sent the corner into the box. Bamford headed it back into the center of goal finding Sany Kong, who doubled the home side's lead to 2-0 as header found the back of the net in the 70th minute mere seconds after coming onto the pitch.
"I came in and I just wanted to score for the team," Sany Kong said about coming on and scoring the goal. "Bamford did a perfect header. I saw the ball and just head it. Everything went so fast. I was in the moment and scored
Janjic kept the shutout intact with his third and final save of the match in the 73rd minute as MU took the contest.
Marshall outshot Gardner-Webb 11-8, including 5-3 in shots on goal. Simon led The Herd with three shots and two on target.
