COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 10 Marshall Men's Soccer team (5-1-1, 1-0-0 SBC) handed the (RV) South Carolina Gamecocks (4-1-2, 0-1-0 SBC) its first loss, 2-1, of the season to open Sun Belt Conference play Friday in Columbia, South Carolina.

Alexander Stjernegaard tallied the game-winner in the second half with Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos netting a goal in the first. Both of their goals were their second of the season.

"We talked before the match, that the time for judging our match based on performance was over, today we have to judge ourselves on getting the three points," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "South Carolina was a really tough opponent, but I thought our guys battled well, and quite often we were able to execute on our game plan. There are still somethings to work on, obviously, but I thought we improved a lot of aspects of our play tonight, and we fought hard for the points. That's all we can ask for."

Loic Sany Kong registered the first shot on goal of the match in the sixth moment, but his attempt was saved.

The Gamecocks took the lead at the 19:51 mark on a goal by Ethan Ballek. However, The Herd did not wait long to equalize as Rodrigues dos Santos took the ball off a deflection in the box and beat the South Carolina keeper less than three minutes later.

Goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic followed by a making a crucial save in the 27th minute to keep the score tied 1-1 heading into halftime.

Janjic then opened the second half with another big save in the 51st minute to keep the score deadlocked 1-1.

In the 58th minute, Pablo Simon sent in a cross that was cleared by the South Carolina defense. The clearance found Stjernegaard just outside the 18-yard box and the junior volleyed it into the bottom left corner to put Marshall up 2-1.

Janjic came up with two more bug saves in the 81st and 89th minutes to seal the victory for The Herd.
