HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 7 Marshall Men's Soccer team (6-1-1, 1-0-0 SBC) took its final non-conference match of the season with a 1-0 shutout over the No. 22 VCU Rams (4-2-2, 1-0-0 A10) Wednesday night at Hoops Family Field.
Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos scored his third goal of the season and second in as may games as Dan Rose recorded his second shutout of the season.
"We seemed to be very good in the first half moving the ball and then it became a little tighter to play at the back," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I think we got away with one at the end. I thought Dan made a great save."
The Herd recorded the first two shots on goal in the game as Taimu Okiyoshi fired one in the ninth minute and Holmes in the 31st as both attempts were saved.
Then in the 36th minute, Marco Silva dropped off a ball to Loic Sany Kong. Sany Kong followed by playing tic-tac-toe with Rodrigues dos Santos, who beat the Rams goalkeeper for the eventual game-winner.
Rose came up large in goal in the second half. All four of the redshirt freshman's saves came in the final 45 minutes of the contest.
"It was a tough game, we knew we had to win it," Rose said. "We got the goal early on and had to hold on. The boys did amazing to hold onto the lead. We played really smart at the end. We play really well, but we were smart today."
The English keeper made his first save in the 54th minute and then made a pair in quick succession in the 55th.
Rose then came up with a huge stop in the 78th minute to blank the Rams.
Marshall outshot VCU 15-8, including 6-4 in shots on goal.
