HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men's Basketball and the City of Huntington teamed up on Monday night for "Project Lights On" – an initiative geared toward identifying and repairing streetlight outages within the Fairfield community.
Members of the Marshall Men's Basketball team joined Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell, Huntington Councilwoman Teresa Johnson and neighborhood volunteers at the Marie Redd Senior Life and Enrichment Center in an effort to enhance public safety for Huntington residents by logging broken street lights in need of repair.
"One of the primary tenants of The Herd Mentality is to dedicate to others, meaning that we are going to invest in our campus and community through service," said Gerald J. Harrison, Marshall's Vice President and Director of Athletics. "The Project Lights On initiative was a great opportunity for our student-athletes and coaches to demonstrate our commitment to improving our home – Huntington, W.Va. We would like to thank Mayor Patrick Farrell for inviting The Herd to serve the Fairfield community."
According to Scott Lemley, Chief Data Officer for the City of Huntington, there were 49 lights that were out in the Fairfield Community which will be reported to AEP for repair, making the event a huge success for the city.
'Project Lights On' has been a city-wide public service initiative that has made progress in Highlawn, Guyandotte, Altizer and Westmoreland previously before Monday's event in Fairfield.
The Fairfield portion of the project is especially connected to Marshall Athletics and Marshall Men's Basketball as the main throughway in the community is named Hal Greer Boulevard in honor of Hal Greer - one of Marshall's greatest all-time athletes who achieved collegiate and professional success at the highest level. His statue stands outside of Marshall's Cam Henderson Center where the Thundering Herd plays its games.
Monday's event continues a special partnership between City Hall, Marshall University, Marshall Athletics and Huntington residents to forge the closest community-university bond in the nation.
Marshall Men's Basketball opens its exhibition season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Alice Lloyd and its first regular-season home game is Nov. 12 against Elon. To purchase tickets for the 2025 season, click HERE.
