Trotter’s INT return for TD ties him for nation’s lead
CONWAY, S.C. – Marshall Football led at halftime, but second-half turnovers were too much to overcome in a 44-27 loss to Coastal Carolina in front of 17,034 fans at Brooks Stadium on Thursday night.
With the loss, Marshall is now 4-4 overall on the year and 2-2 in the Sun Belt Conference.
"It's just a very disappointing night," Marshall football head coach Tony Gibson said. "You know, we didn't play well on either side of the ball. We started out well and got momentum early but couldn't hold on, couldn't finish. We got out-played, out-coached. Give credit to Coastal and Coach Beck. We just couldn't recover from all the negative stuff."
Marshall took a 27-17 lead after a touchdown pass from Carlos Del Rio-Wilson to DeAndre Tamarez on the first possession of the third quarter.
However, the Chanticleers rattled off 20 straight points to end the third quarter after four consecutive turnovers by the Herd. The team also had a muffed punt to begin the fourth that proved costly.
"Three right out of the gate in the second half – that's never good," Gibson said. "They got some momentum and they took advantage of the turnovers."
The loss overshadowed some great individual efforts from the Herd in the contest.
Running back Antwan Roberts notched the first 100-yard game of his Marshall career, finishing with a career-high 134 yards on 15 carries in the loss.
Marshall also started the game strong when cornerback Boogie Trotter intercepted a pass on Coastal Carolina's first drive and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown.
The interception was Trotter's fifth of the season, which ties him for No. 1 in FBS, and it was the second time in three weeks that he returned one for a score.
Marshall kicker Lorcan Quinn also tied for the second-longest field goal in Herd history in the first half when he connected on a 55-yard field goal. That field goal is the longest in the Sun Belt Conference this season. Quinn had a pair of field goals on Thursday.
Del Rio-Wilson finished the game 21 of 36 for 153 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
The Herd returns to action on Nov. 8 when the team hosts James Madison at Noon in the annual '75' game. That contest will be shown on ESPN2, it was announced on Thursday night.
