Herd Volleyball Drops Opener at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (9-9, 1-4 SBC) fell in straight sets to James Madison (25-15, 25-18, 25-15) on Thursday night in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

"We struggled with our serve and pass game which hindered us getting into our offense," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "We started battling in set 2 and then had a bad rotation of offensive errors that let JMU go on a big run and take the momentum. SBC is tough and you have to come to play and battle every night and we didn't. We have another opportunity tomorrow to respond."

Emma Barnett led Marshall's attack with nine kills, adding five digs, three assists and two blocks. Bella Thompson topped the squad with 20 assists and 11 digs for a double-double. Freshman Carys Kerr contributed eight kills, while Beatrice Ciccarelli posted five kills and matched the team lead with two blocks.

In the opening set, Marshall hung close early and trailed just 10-8 before James Madison surged ahead. The Dukes closed the set on a 13-4 run to take it 25-15.

The Herd built a 12-8 lead midway through the second, but James Madison responded with a 6-0 run. JMU's offense continued to roll, wrapping up the set 25-18.

The Dukes built a 7-2 lead to start the third. Marshall could not recover, as JMU finished the set with a 25-15 win.

Marshall closes the weekend on Friday night at 6 p.m. with another match against JMU.
