HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A native of Hurricane, West Virginia, Marshall University Cross Country and Track & Field student-athlete Asha Bora is heading to San Diego.
Bora has worn the Thundering Herd uniform for 54 different meets over the last four seasons, now she will be representing herself and Marshall at the Society for Neuroscience 2025 Annual Meeting from Nov. 15th-19th at the San Diego Convention Center in California. She will be giving her poster presentation on Monday the 17th.
"I'm always proud to represent Marshall, whether it's wearing the name across my chest when I'm racing or attending conferences like these for the university," Bora said. "I see this conference as a great opportunity to share the amazing work happening at Marshall and across the state through the statewide grant I'm a part of. I've lived in West Virginia my whole life, so it's important to me that I can contribute my unique perspective as a West Virginia in conversations with neuroscientists and other students."
Asha is a member of Marshall University's Society of Yeager Scholars Class of 2026. She is one of three Class of 2026 student-athlete Yeager Scholars alongside Marshall Volleyball's Bella Thompson and Herd Cheer's Alexis Steele.
"Asha exemplifies what we look for in a student-athlete," Director Keith Roberts said. "All of the many things she has done in our program and team is second to none. She has shown such a high level of leadership and ability. We are excited to see her taking her opportunities as a student-athlete at Marshall and using it to achieve her goals. We always promote our student-athletes being well-rounded. We have so many student athletes on this campus who are well-rounded and she stands out among everyone."
As a senior this year with MU Cross Country, Bora set 5K and 6K personal records, scoring for the team at last week's Sun Belt Conference Championship. Her time at Friday's championship race was a full 30 seconds faster than her time at the 2022 edition as a freshman.
"It has been amazing to see Asha grow into a leadership role this past year, both on and off the track," Cross Country Coach Caleb Bowen said. "She has done a great job getting the whole team together and helping one another bond. She does a great job of demonstrating what it takes to be a student-athlete. Not only is she leading the team on the course, but is doing so while being a Yeager Scholar and doing the undergraduate research she is currently presenting. I am proud of the person she has become."
Asha credits Marshall University for the opportunities she has earned. Last summer, she was selected to participate in the competitive Amgen Scholars undergraduate research program this summer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
"My time at Marshall has helped me engage with these opportunities by giving me the skills to succeed in research," Bora added. "I've participated in independent research through Dr. Spitzer's lab at Marshall for over two years. Through my work, I've practiced lab techniques and developed my scientific communication ability. I also feel like my time as an athlete has greatly improved my time management ability and strengthened my work ethic. I wouldn't be able to accomplish any of it without the support of my parents, teachers, and coaches, who are always willing to help me succeed in every facet of my life. Moving forward, I'm confident that my time at Marshall has equipped me with the skills to pursue a PhD in neuroscience after I graduate in the spring."
