Marshall Women’s Basketball Opens Conference Play with 75-62 Education Day Victory

Timaya Lewis-Eutsey scores career-high 31 points as Marshall pulls away with 26-point final quarter on Education Day.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball opened Sun Belt Conference play in emphatic fashion Wednesday morning, rolling past App State 75-62 at the Cam Henderson Center behind a career-high 31 points from Timaya Lewis-Eutsey. The Herd improved to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt play, delighting a crowd of over 3,000 local students on Education Day.

After a first half defined by back-and-forth action and 12 ties, Marshall seized control with a 48-point second half. The Herd trailed by four after one quarter but led 27-24 heading into halftime, thanks in part to two clutch free throws from Lewis-Eutsey in the final seconds of the half. From there, Marshall amped up the pace, pulling away with a decisive 26-point fourth quarter fueled by efficient team offense and relentless defense.

"I was really proud of our effort," Coach Juli Fulks said. "A huge shoutout to our players because if we all care about how we win and we don't care about what our role is that day we are really good and I thought we did a really job today and the last four-five games of having our primary goal of having more points on the board at the end and nothing else really matters, I thought [today] was a really good team effort."

Lewis-Eutsey was unstoppable all morning, connecting on 11-of-16 field goals. She finished with 31 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Olivia Olson provided the perfect complement, pouring in 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a key 3-pointer late to put the game out of reach.

Leyocha Marigney anchored the defense with seven four blocks and six rebounds, while Blessing King created havoc on the perimeter with a game-high four steals. Marshall outscored App State 40-22 in the paint and also capitalized on 13 points off turnovers.

Senior Meredith Maier wore number 67 for the game to the excitement of the students in attendance.

"I was approached by Marshall Athletics staff and asked if I was excited to change my number and I said 'Who is taking 23?' I've had that number for four years now, let's not be funny," Maier said with a smile. Then they asked me if I wanted to wear 67 for the Education Day Game. I told them I don't know what that means but I'll do it."

"I think it fuels everybody, not just me. It means a lot to have the support we have. As older players, as a senior in college, I hope people watching in the stands will someday want to do the same thing I am doing."
