Herd notches 30 assists for the first time since 2016

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (8-5) seized control early and never looked back in a 102-52 win over the WVU Tech Golden Bears Tuesday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
If I had to talk about one thing, it's 30 assists on 38 makes, Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the win. Happy to see Caleb get back on track. He had seven threes. He came out and really looked for his shots. We're still looking for the consistency of it. Let's carry the same play into the Sun Belt.
Marshall finished with 30 assists on 38 field goals and forced 17 turnovers, converting those into 29 points. The team reached 30 assists for the first time since February 6, 2016, in a win at UTSA.
The team also controlled the glass, finishing with a 51-26 rebounding edge and holding the Golden Bears to just 26 points in each half.
Caleb Hollenbeck led all scorers with 25 points, connecting on seven three-pointers and grabbing eight rebounds while also contributing four assists and two steals. His hot shooting established momentum for the Herd, including a first-half jumper that put Marshall ahead for good. Wyatt Fricks was a force inside, tallying 19 points and eight boards on 8-for-14 shooting, helping Marshall outscore the Golden Bears 46-14 in the paint.
Noah Otshudi delivered a near-flawless all-around effort, notching 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and no turnovers while shooting 4-for-5 from the floor. Jalen Speer further fueled the offensive explosion, pacing the Herd with seven assists and adding eight points and six rebounds as the ball zipped around the perimeter and into the paint.
Marshall's bench showcased its depth, chipping in 29 points highlighted by a late three-pointer from Bryce Slay that extended the lead to as much as 54. Matt Van Komen anchored the defense with three blocks and added a buzzer-beating jumper to end the first half, cementing the Herd's 46-26 advantage at the break.

Marshall resumes Sun Belt Conference play next Wednesday against Georgia State. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. against the Panthers on New Year's Eve.
