ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (5-4) an offensive battle falling 88-81 to the Ohio Bobcats at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio, on Saturday.
We got outplayed from start to finish, Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the game. We didn't come into the game with the right toughness, the right mental toughness.
The matchup was packed with scoring fireworks from both sides, highlighted by Noah Otshudi continuing his scoring surge with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Wyatt Fricks added 18 points and eight rebounds. Marshall dominated the paint with a 44-28 scoring advantage and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points.
The Herd started strong and led 16-15 midway through the first half before Ohio responded with a scoring run, eventually building a 38-26 lead. Marshall entered halftime trailing 40-34 but came out energized in the second half, trimming the deficit to just two points at 56-54 following a layup by Jalen Speer, but just couldn't get on top of the home side in the second half.
Speer facilitated the offense with five assists and 13 points. Matt Van Komen anchored the defense with five blocks and eight rebounds, helping Marshall finish with a 40-31 edge on the glass.
Marshall recorded six blocks in the contest, with Van Komen accounting for all but one, and held a rebounding advantage throughout. Ohio went 10-for-24 shooting from beyond the arc and a 20-for-29 effort at the free-throw line.
