Three-time Super Bowl Champion & 15-year NFL great is also a Marshall Athletics HOFer
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Former Marshall Football great Troy Brown was announced on Wednesday as a newly-inducted member of the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
Brown, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots and a National Champion with the Thundering Herd, is also in the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame.
Brown is part of a five-person Hall of Fame class that will be etched into history during the 12th Annual Enshrinement Ceremony, which takes place on April 17, 2025, at the Hotel Hartness in Greenville, South Carolina.
The native of Barnwell, S.C. played high school football for Blackville-Hilda before moving on to Lees-McRae for two years in 1989-90.
Brown then transferred to Marshall University where he became one of Marshall's top wide receivers and return specialists in history. Brown's career average of 29.69 yards per return is still a record.
In 1991, he led the Division I-AA ranks in both kickoff and punt return average before making a bigger name for himself as a wide receiver in 1992, forming one of the top collegiate duos with quarterback Michael Payton, which helped lead Marshall to its first-ever Division I-AA National Championship.
In that 1992 Division I-AA National Championship win, Brown made the game's clinching defensive play, intercepting the final pass of the game to preserve the Herd's 31-28 win over Youngstown State.
Following his Marshall playing days, Brown was drafted in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, starting an illustrious 15-year career with the Patriots in which he won three Super Bowls.
During the Patriots' first Super Bowl run in 2001, Brown caught 101 passes for 1,199 yards and five touchdowns from prolific quarterback Tom Brady.
In his NFL career, Brown caught 557 passes for 6,366 yards and 31 touchdowns while also logging three interceptions as an emergency defensive back for the Patriots. For his efforts, Brown was named to the New England Patriots' All-Dynasty Team and 50th Anniversary Team, and he was also inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame.
