PENSACOLA, Fla. – Marshall Women's Basketball continued its run in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament with a 68-62 win over Texas State on Wednesday at the Pensacola Bay Center.
The win moves Marshall into the third round of the 2025 SBC Tournament where the Herd will take on Louisiana at 3 p.m. ET/ 2 p.m. CT on Thursday afternoon.
"The first quarter, we were out of sorts," Marshall head coach Juli Fulks said. "We settled down, I think, about eight minutes to go in the 2nd quarter and from there on out, I thought we played really well where it looked like this is what we do and how and why."
Aislynn Hayes scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half as Marshall overcame a halftime deficit to win for the fifth time in six games.
Blessing King scored a career-high 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting and Meredith Maier added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
"I think as the season went on, our coaches have stressed the point of coming together when times get tough in the games," King said. "When we come together, we're just saying, 'They're going to go on their run; it's time for us to go on our run.' We know it's a game of runs so we just keep pushing forward."
Led by Hayes, the Herd attacked the rim consistently in the second half, which got the team to the free throw line.
Hayes drew 13 fouls in the contest and notched 11 of her points at the foul line. Marshall shot 25 of 35 as a team at the charity stripe.
"We had a collective mindset that we want to be here for five more games and we were not going to settle for anything less," Maier said. "We knew we weren't shooting it well, so we had to find other ways and getting to the basket helped. We just kept attacking and got a lot of their players in foul trouble and utilized the foul line."
Marshall trailed 33-31 at the half but quickly turned the game in its favor to start the third quarter.
Hayes had a pair of and-1 baskets and C.C. Mays added a 3-pointer during a 9-2 run to start the second half, which gave the Herd a 40-35 lead.
The turnaround came after Texas State came out strong early, building a double-digit lead late in the first quarter. The Herd kept its poise and methodically came back to cut the deficit to a one-possession game at the break.
King was a catalyst in the first half, scoring six points on three attacks at the rim to aid Marshall to a 23-point quarter that got the Herd back in the game.
Maddie Kellione also notched her 400th career assist in the game, leading the Herd with three assists on the day. She also had nine points in the win.
