Loss ends incredible run at the 2025 SBC Tournament for Herd women
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The magical run for Marshall Women's Basketball came to an end in the 2025 SBC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Pensacola Bay Center.
Marshall battled throughout, but was unable to advance to the semifinals as Troy earned an 85-54 victory.
The loss ends a season in which the Herd won eight of its final 11 games to finish the year.
"I was incredibly proud of the effort today," Marshall Women's Basketball coach Juli Fulks said. "In the third quarter, we were 2 of 20 and we have not allowed anyone to use the word 'tired' this week – it has been forbidden – but I thought that quarter was the first in which you saw the legs really starting to go."
Aislynn Hayes led the Thundering Herd with 23 points, concluding an incredible two-year run in which she went 7-1 and earned a title in SBC Tournament play.
Hayes said the team really started to jell together at the end of the season, and it showed in the results.
"I wouldn't want to go out any other way," Hayes said. "We fought this whole entire tournament. So many people stepped up and it's an unforgettable moment. I feel like we won in a way because we found ourselves in this tournament as a team. That's a great way to go out."
Timberlynn Yeast also had a banner effort with eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds in the loss.
Marshall saw Troy take a double-digit lead midway through the second quarter, but rallied back to get momentum late in the half and cut the deficit to 40-34 at the break.
Hayes led the way for the Herd in the first half, scoring 14 of her 23 points while attacking the rim with success.
However, the Herd couldn't close the gap as Troy got it going.
The loss ends a strong run in which Marshall won four straight at the SBC Tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.
