ROME, Ga. – The sixth-seeded Marshall University Tennis team (20-5) is headed to the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday after a 4-1 win over the seventh-seeded Troy Trojans (13-10) Saturday in the semifinals at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
"I'm proud of the way the team fought today to make it to the Championship. Alina did another great job fighting back to seal the match like yesterday. Now we face a tough Old Dominion team tomorrow," Head Coach John Mercer said.
Like on Friday, Alina Mokrynskaya fell her in opening set at No. 3 singles. Like clockwork, the freshman battled back to take her second set 6-4 and followed that up with a 6-2 triumph in the third set to down Valeriia Avdeeva and send The Herd to the Championship.
In doubles, Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane dropped their first game at No. 2 doubles but rallied to capture the next six to take their contest over Troy's Emilia Namyslo and Gabrielle Leslie.
Mokrynskaya and Emma Vanderheyden quickly followed with a 6-1 win at No. 1 over Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis to take the doubles point for MU. Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout were leading 5-0 at No. 3 as their match went unfinished.
McGrane finished the first singles contest 6-3, 6-0, over Leena Metwally to give Marshall a 2-0 lead. Strom quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-0, triumph at No. 1 over Gabrielle Leslie to make it 3-0 for The Herd before Mokrynskaya sealed the match.
Nour El Ouazzani was up 5-2 and on match point in the third set before her match went unfinished.
