All Herd sport programs earn above a 3.0 GPA in Spring 2025; Six programs finish with perfect APRs in latest NCAA release

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Athletics is pleased to announce that all its sport programs achieved a 3.0 Team GPA or higher for the Spring 2025 semester that recently ended.

The achievement means that every Marshall Athletics program performed at a 3.0 or above for both the fall and spring semesters of the 2024-25 academic year – a first in Marshall Athletics history.

"The Buck Harless Student-Athlete Program staff takes great pride in the dedication of our student-athletes, who continue to excel not only in their sport, but in the classroom," said Kaylyn Torain, Assistant Athletic Director for Academics for Marshall Athletics. "This spring, every team achieved above a 3.0 GPA – a testament to their hard work, discipline and commitment to academic success."

For the semester, Marshall Athletics earned a 3.36 Overall GPA among its student-athletes. That mark is the second-highest semester GPA on record for Marshall Athletics.

"One of the best decisions we made was partnering directly with the Provost Office and the leadership team in Academic Affairs," said Christian Spears, Marshall's Director of Athletics. "They manage our team of amazing academic advisors in intercollegiate athletics. They provide oversight, they ensure proper procedures and protocols, and these best-ever results are the outcome of that partnership."

Marshall Women's Golf led all programs in Team GPA with a 3.95 for the Spring 2025 semester while Marshall Volleyball was second with a 3.73 Team GPA. Men's Golf set a new program record and led all men's programs with a 3.69 Team GPA while Men's Soccer was second with a 3.51, which also eclipsed the previous program high set in Fall 2023.

For the second straight semester, Marshall Football established a new record, finishing the Spring 2025 semester with a 3.09 Team GPA.

Three programs also registered their second-highest Team GPA for a semester in Spring 2025 – Baseball (3.36), Women's Soccer (3.58) and Women's Golf.

Those strong all-around academic performances led to Marshall having 111 of its student-athletes making the President's List (4.0 GPA) while 170 were named as Dean's List honorees (3.3 GPA or better).

"I'm honored to work with Kaylyn Torain and her academic success team," Spears said. "Their care and their commitment have made our program one of the best in the Sun Belt Conference with 25 percent of our student-athletes earning a 4.0 and every team with a 3.0 GPA or better. That's just phenomenal."

In addition to the GPA honors, NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Data was recently released by the NCAA with six Marshall programs receiving perfect 1,000 marks in APR for the latest completed term, which was 2023-24. The APR is a metric utilized by the NCAA that accounts for eligibility and retention in student-athletes for each academic term.

Programs receiving a perfect 1,000 score for the 2023-24 year include Women's Golf, Women's Soccer, Women's Swim & Dive, Women's Tennis, Volleyball and Men's Basketball.

Of those six programs, three of them achieved a perfect 1,000 on the Multi-Year APR, which was also released. The Multi-Year APR factors in four years of academic data. Those programs were Women's Golf, Women's Swim & Dive and Women's Tennis.
