NEW ORLEANS – Marshall Cross Country sophomore Destiny Berryman has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Wednesday, as announced by the league office.
Berryman has had a breakout start to her sophomore season in Huntington, setting a new personal record 5K time of 17:34 at the Southern Showcase in Alabama last Friday, finishing 44th out of 481 runners in an extremely competitive field. The Doddridge County High School graduate opened the season by racing a sub-18 minute cross country 5K for the first time in her collegiate career at the Thundering Herd Invitational.
"We are so stoked for Destiny," Head Cross Country Coach Caleb Bowen said. "She's trained so hard all summer and fall and it's so much fun watching her progress. She's an extremely tough racer and she showed that this past weekend in Huntsville. "
The Clarksburg native is carrying over the momentum from her freshman track season last spring, where she ended the year with a silver medal in the 1500 meter run at the SBC Outdoor Championships.
"Destiny is an amazing student-athlete and person," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Keith Roberts said. "She has a challenging class schedule and has to train on her own most of the week. Her mentality is a major part of her success. I couldn't be more proud of her."
Berryman and the Marshall Cross Country teams return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Live in Lou Classic.
