HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (11-7, 3-3 SBC) saw its comeback fall short in an 85-83 decision to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
"We gave ourselves a chance. We got down early, fought back and had a chance. Free throws cost us again," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the game.
Noah Otshudi erupted for a career-high 30 points on 12-of-23 shooting, including a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Otshudi also led the team with four assists, becoming the first Marshall player to cross the 30-point plateau in SBC play this season.
Jalen Speer fueled the Herd's second-half rally with 24 points, tying his career high in field goal attempts (22) and connecting on four three-pointers. The dynamic backcourt duo combined for 54 points and helped Marshall shoot a season-best 52.9 percent from three-point range. As a team, the Herd committed just six turnovers, matching its season low and converting 16 points off Coastal Carolina's 12 giveaways.
Matt Van Komen anchored the paint with 13 rebounds, tying his season high and grabbing five offensive boards. Van Komen also recorded two blocks and two steals. Wyatt Fricks added 11 points and six rebounds extending his double-digit scoring streak to seven games.
Despite trailing by as many as 13 points midway through the second half, Marshall surged back. The contest saw five lead changes and three ties, highlighted by Otshudi's clutch jumper to knot the score at 80-80 with under a minute left. Coastal Carolina responded with a dunk, and after a late Otshudi three-pointer cut the deficit to one, the Chanticleers sealed the win at the free-throw line. Joshua Beadle and AJ Dancler led Coastal Carolina with 26 points apiece. The Herd outscored the visitors 51-46 in the second half.
