SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (13-8, 5-4 SBC) rallied from a 14-point deficit, but saw its comeback fall short in a 72-68 loss to Texas State at Strahan Arena on Wednesday night in San Marcos, Texas.
"Tough loss," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said. "I thought they took it to us in the first half. They came to the game with work boots and hard hats and their sleeves rolled up. We came with tuxedos and bow ties, thinking it was going to be a pretty game. We bounced back in the second half. Obviously, we had our chances, but we didn't make the plays."
Wyatt Fricks scored 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding four blocks for a new career high. Noah Otshudi bounced back with 15 points, reaching double figures for the 17th time this season.
Jalen Speer recorded 14 points, a team-high three assists, and tying his season best with three steals. Matt Van Komen grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and adding three blocks as Marshall outscored Texas State in the paint 40-36.
Marshall trailed 39-29 at halftime and by as many 14 points, 47-33, with just over 16 minutes remaining in the contest. However, the Herd would claw back and take its first lead since the 15:58 mark in the first half with a Speer triple to go up 64-63 with 6:10 left on the clock.
The Bobcats would answer by scoring the final seven points of the game with Kaden Gumbs hitting a go-ahead three-pointer with 21 seconds left for the eventual game-winning basket to end the Herd's rally on the road.
